Welcome to 2026! I hope you've all made full recovery from the holiday festivities and have kept your New Years resolutions! I wish each of you a successful and healthy 2026!
We've had to relocated our monthly meetings to a new location listed below. We appreciate the folks at Piedmont Natural Gas Technology Center for allowing us to utilize their facilities for the past few years.
ASPE National and the chapter have several events coming up and we've updated our calendar for your convivence. If you need any information about those events or want to get involved please reach out to me and I'll get you in touch with the right people. Also, if you have suggestions for future technical programs topics, please reach out to myself and/or Les Scott.

Chapter Legislative Report

Did you know these requirements do not apply to apartment buildings three stories or less?
ASHRAE 90.1 applies to the following types of water heaters:
- Storage Water Heaters: Both gas-fired and electric units that maintain a reservoir of hot water.
- Instantaneous (Tankless) Water Heaters: Gas-fired and electric units that heat water on demand.
- Residential-Duty Commercial Water Heaters: A "hybrid" class of gas-fired storage tanks (typically 75,000–105,000 Btu/h) used in light commercial applications.
- Unfired Hot Water Storage Tanks: Tanks that store hot water heated by a separate external source.
- Pool Heaters: Specifically, gas-fired and heat pump pool heaters, including requirements for vapor-retardant covers and time switches.
- Electric Resistance Water Heaters: Standard electric units, including specific categories for "table-top" models.
There will be some changes to ASHRAE 90.1 that take effect in October of this year:
Condensing Technology Mandate: Beginning October 6, 2026, all newly manufactured commercial gas-fired storage and instantaneous water heaters must utilize condensing technology to meet new efficiency minimums.
- Efficiency Increases: Commercial gas storage heaters will require a minimum thermal efficiency (TE) of 95%, while gas instantaneous heaters will require 96% TE
Thanks!
