Chapter President Report

It's March Madness! I hope you all enjoyed your St. Patrick's Day fest ivies if you participated. We held our annual scholarship golf tournament last week (Friday 13th) at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation. It was our biggest tournament ever! I want to personally thank all of the sponsors, volunteers and Olde Sycamore. We came away with some great ideas to make the tournament even better for next year.

This month we had planned to meet at UNCC but just couldn't get everything dialed in. Having a meeting at the university is a primary goal of ours. We want to reach the young engineers where they are. Stay tuned for more information on this future meeting.

ASPE National and the chapter have several events coming up and we've updated our calendar for your convivence. If you need any information about those events or want to get involved please reach out to me and I'll get you in touch with the right people. Also, if you have suggestions for future technical programs topics, please reach out to myself and/or Les Scott.

Our  chapter meeting will be located at:

Hoffman Hydronics

1133 Upper Ashbury Avenue Charlotte, NC 28206

Chapter Technical Report

Thank you to all of those how came to last month meeting. The webinar gave some good insight required for fire protection systems for Mission Critical Facilities.

We started this topic last year with our combined meeting with local ASHRAE chapter.  This year we are focusing on plumbing specific systems and sustainable water heating solutions application and selection.

Come join us as Bryce Malone of Nyle Water Heating Systems walks us through the water heater selections for this growing market.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, March 24th, 2026, at 11:30 pm

By the way the chapter is in need of a presenter for April.  If you have a topic that you feel would be beneficial to the Chapter, please let me know.

Chapter Legislative Report

The transition from the 2018 edition to the 2024 edition introduces several significant updates:
Fixture and Accessibility Standards:
Showerhead Flow Rates: Flow is now limited to 2.0 gallons per minute (GPM) to meet higher efficiency requirements.
Fixture Access: New rules measure travel distance to the nearest toilet room from the most remote point of any room along an unobstructed path.
Piping and Infrastructure:
Tracer Wire: Mandatory for buried plastic sewer piping to ensure easier location in the future.
Buried Piping Support: New provisions address the support of piping buried beneath buildings in areas with expansive soil conditions.
Vacuum Testing: An optional vacuum testing method has been added for drain-waste-vent (DWV) piping.
Joint Standards: Updated installation standards for solvent-cemented plastic piping joints.
Equipment and Safety:
Water Heater Pans: Plastic pans for gas-fired water heaters must now be tested according to ASTM E84 or UL 723 standards.
Chemical Waste: New specific standards have been established for chemical waste piping materials.
Leak Detection: Requirements for leak detection monitoring with alarms have been added where discharge from safety relief valves is not "readily visible".
As we reported last month, full addoption of the new codes remains on hold for the forseable future, however some architects are already using the new codes as they begin new projects. Be ready!
